Currently Watching: Anime (Gamers!)

Greetings and welcome to my new segment named Currently Watching. Today I’m going to introduce an anime i’m currently watching. That anime is Gamers! It was originally a Japanese light novel series. It has been adapted to a 12 episode anime which is still currently airing. It began on July 13, 2017. A new episode is released every Friday and can be found on CrunchyRoll and KissAnime.

Synopsis

This is a light-hearted romance comedy (RomCom) centered on our loner gamer protagonist, Amano Keita, and his misadventures and hilarious misunderstandings through high school making new friends and love interests along the way.

Highlights

A major theme in this anime is video games. It is anywhere and everywhere in the anime. It parodies most of the major games, except the few from its sponsor. The opening credits is basically a parody paying homage to different video games, including PUBG. You’ll find a modified version of Life, COD, and Street fighter sprinkled throughout. See if you can spot them.

Another major theme is adolescence misunderstanding. This is what really makes this anime shine in my eyes. It adds the majority of comedy, but also can remind viewers of their own romantic misunderstandings and such from their own youth. One great example is when Keita is hanging out with his friend’s girlfriend Aguri. He spots one of his friend Chiaki, and talks to her about how amazing Aguri is. The problem is, Chiaki believes Aguri is dating Keita, and Keita’s explanation out of context sounds like he is dating Aguri. This created a significant misunderstanding and resulted in sort of like a love square?

And before I forget, the opening song is freaking addicting. The opening is titled "GAMERS!" and is by Hisako Kanemoto, Manaka Iwami and Rumi Ōkubo (the voice actresses of the main female characters). It is very upbeat, and cheerful. Did I mention it has a fast feeling to it like an adrenaline rush? The instrumentals includes some electronic sounds giving it a very video gaming feel to it, which is fitting. Listening to this song pumps you up in a very non-typical way, sort of like you are playing a videogame, like the 2d super mario game. Don’t blame me if you get addicted to it… if you don’t and find it annoying, don’t blame me either haha
